How did the Town get the grant?
The Town of Superior commissioned a volunteer technical advisory
committee, comprised of local officials, business owners,
Information Technology (IT) professionals, economic
development professionals, and local citizens to explore
the possibility of acquiring high-speed Internet Service.
The Town, with the assistance of the Arizona Department of
Commerce, submitted a grant proposal, and was awarded the
grant by the USDA in June 2006.
What does this mean for Superior?
Residents, business, industry, and visitors will be able
to access fast, reliable Internet access within the
Greater Superior Area.
The installation of this vital utility will bolster
local businesses’ opportunity to expand or enhance
their operations.
Provide new development opportunities by attracting
new businesses, thus diversifying the Town’s economy.
What will High-Speed Internet Service do for residents and
businesses?
Enable
residents and business owners to readily access worldwide
information quickly.
Provide residents who must commute to work an opportunity
to telecommute, reducing gasoline consumption and time away
from home and family.
Provides local business owners the opportunity to expand
their advertising, sales, or services by providing ready,
low-cost, efficient, and fast access to e-commerce and telecommuting.
Attract new businesses and services that require high-speed
Internet access in place to conduct business.
How will High-Speed Internet Service be implemented?
The grant will enable the Town to pay for the necessary infrastructure
to install and implement a Wi-Fi canopy covering the
entire Town.
The Town, with the assistance of the technical advisory committee,
will explore the needs, obstacles, and steps necessary to
implement the terms of the grant.
The Town will contract with professionals to install the
necessary equipment tallow the Town to “go live.”
The Town will then contract with an Internet Service Provider
to manage the utility.
How soon can the Town expect service to begin?
The Town is required to expend all grant money by March 2007.
Residents and businesses can expect to have service available
soon after March 2007.
What can I expect to pay for the service if I subscribe to
the service?
The infrastructure for the service is already paid for, eliminating
the need to recovercosts associated with building and installing
equipment.
As a broad estimate, the average residential subscriber can
expect to pay $25 to $40 per month, comparable with other
services in larger cities.
