Wi-Fi Terms
Wi-Fi:
Wi-fi or wireless fidelity is the means to connect to the
Internet wirelessly by a radio signal broadcasted over
an area. Wi-Fi eliminates the need to use phone or other
hard lines to connect to the Internet.
High-Speed Internet or Broadband:
High-speed Internet refers to Internet service that uploads
and downloads information at a faster rate than a conventional
telephone “dial-up” service. Typically,
high-speed service has an average transfer rate 10 times
faster than conventional dial-up service.
Hotspot or Canopy:
A hotspot or canopy is an area where a Wi-Fi broadcast signal
can be received.
Telecommute:
Telecommuting allows you to work from home using high-speed
Internet to link to your computer (and sometimes phone)
at your place of business. Telecommuting is also known
as a “virtual office.”
E-Commerce:
E-commerce is the ability to exchange goods, services, or
other consumables over the Internet. This includes selling
products or services, inexpensive advertising, or providing
information that will allow businesses to operate. This
is also referred to as a “virtual marketplace.”
Infrastructure:
The inner-workings of a service or utility. For Wi-Fi service,
this includes signal transmitters, towers or poles,
and any other equipment necessary to send out a Wi-Fi
signal.
“Go Live”:
A term used to indicate that a digital service is on-line
and available.
Internet Service Provider:
An Internet Service Provider, or ISP, is a company who specializes
in providing management, support, and maintenance to
an Internet network or networks.
The Town of Superior has been awarded a grant from the U. S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development program
to develop and implement High-Speed Internet Service in the
Greater Superior Area (Town).
