JULY 01,2001
Boyce Thompson Arboretum
Admission Increase
Daily admission fees increase by $1 this month at Boyce
Thompson Arboretum
in Superior. Starting July 1 the entry fee for adults is $6, while the cost
is $3 for ages 5-12. Admission remains free to children below age five.
This marks the first fee increase in nearly a decade, although operating
expenses and capital costs have trended steadily upward at the Arboretum,
an Arizona State Park that is cooperatively managed with the University of
Arizona.
"This became necessary for the Arboretum to pay
for the salary increases
that were mandated this year by the state legislature," explained Boyce
Thompson Arboretum Director Dr. William R. Feldman. "Our admission remains
substantially below other comparable attractions throughout Arizona, and I
would like to remind our visitors that the Arboretum is a non-profit
institution and to thank our annual members and daily visitors for their
continued support."
Dr. Feldman added that the cost for annual membership
remains unchanged and
offers year-round access to the world-reknowned botanical collection at $35
for couples and $50 for families. Annual membership through the Friends Of
The Arboretum program also helps support the ecological mission of the
arboretum and entitles members to bookstore sales discounts and also guest
passes for visiting non-family members.
Founded in 1925 and dedicated to instilling in people
an appreciation for
desert plants, the Arboretum is a 300 acre botanical collection that
includes a wide range of habitats and a 1.5 main loop mile walking trail.
Boyce Thompson Arboretum is about 45 minutes east of Mesa on Hwy. 60, near
milepost 223. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For other information call
